Northwest University (NWU, 西北大学) is a national "Project 211" and "Double First-Class" comprehensive university co-constructed by the Ministry of Education and the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government. Tracing its inception to 1902 as Shaanxi College and National Northwest University, NWU is the oldest university in Northwest China and was hailed by British historian Joseph Needham as one of the two premier universities in inland China.
