Yanshan University (YSU, 燕山大学) is a national key university co-constructed by the Hebei Provincial People's Government, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and SASTIND. Born from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) in 1920 and relocated to Qiqihar in 1958 as Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute, it moved south to coastal Qinhuangdao in 1985. In 1978, it was designated by the State Council as one of China's 88 National Key Universities.
Overlooking the Bohai Sea across 4,000 mu in Qinhuangdao, YSU is universally recognized as the "Whampoa of China's Heavy Machinery Industry" (重型机械行业的黄埔). Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering achieve world top-tier standings. 6 disciplines rank in the global top 1% of ESI, with Materials Science and Engineering in the global top 1‰.
